Seven Interviews, Seven Lessons: What Patiala Employers Never Say Out Loud

A local interview is ten minutes and one cup of tea. The decision is usually made before the tea is finished. These seven stories are how I learned what actually decides it.

1. The boy who was early

A showroom near The Mall, 2011. Two candidates, same age, same marks. One arrived ten minutes early and read the price tags while he waited. The owner hired him before the interview started — "he was already learning the stock."

The rule: arrive ten minutes early, alone, and be visibly curious about the business.

2. The girl who had walked past the shop

She'd visited the boutique as a customer the evening before and mentioned the rack she'd rearrange first. Hired on the spot, over five candidates with better certificates.

The rule: know three specific things about the business. "I saw you have..." is the most powerful sentence in a small-city interview.

3. The uncle in the suit

Dressed for a bank director's chair, applying to be a godown supervisor. The owner assumed he'd leave in a month for something "better." He would have.

The rule: dress one level above the job. Clean and ironed beats fancy, every single time.

4. The salary mumble

"Whatever you feel is right, ji." The employer felt ₹9,000 was right. The market said ₹13,000. Twelve years of watching this: vagueness is expensive.

The rule: research the range on the live board and say it out loud: "I've seen ₹12,000–15,000 for this role; I'm flexible for the right place."

5. The English performance

The interview was flowing in Punjabi until the candidate switched to rehearsed English mid-answer and lost his own thread. The job was telecalling — in Punjabi.

The rule: mirror the interviewer's language. Switching comfortably impresses; performing doesn't.

6. The man with no questions

"Any questions?" — "No sir." It read as: I'll take anything and stay for nothing.

The rule: always ask two practical questions. "What would my daily duties be?" and "What time is the shift?" You sound like someone planning to actually work there.

7. The Tuesday message

Of two equally good candidates, one sent a single WhatsApp the next morning: "Thank you for meeting me yesterday. I remain very interested." When the decision came on Friday, the owner could only remember one name.

The rule: follow up once, next day, briefly. Almost nobody does it. That's exactly why it works.

The thread through all seven: the employer across the table has been let down before — by no-shows, by month-one quitters. Every signal of reliable, nearby, ready to learn outweighs marks. That is the real interview.
